Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) Middleweight Champion Anderson Silva isn't about to let a silly lil' thing like recent wins or losses get in the way of a battle between two of the very best mixed martial arts (MMA) fighters to ever grace the Octagon.
This is destiny, Maniacs.
"The Spider," who recently volunteered to step up on short notice to challenge Light HeavyweightChampion Jon Jones at UFC 151 when Dan Henderson went down with an injury, is apparently focused on fighting Welterweight champion Georges St. Pierre next. So much so, in fact, that Silva is already reinforcing his interest just in case "Rush" is unable to defend his 170-pound strap against Carlos Condit at UFC 154 at the Bell Centre in Montreal, Quebec, Canada on Nov. 17, 2012.
The Brazilian explained his thought process to SportTV (via BloodyElbow.com):
"Regardless of who wins, even if St. Pierre loses, a fight with me can happen. A fight like this is above anything else. St. Pierre is one of the greatest of the UFC. Right now, a fight with Condit is meaningless."
Meaningless!
Perhaps that's a bit of hyperbole, or maybe even something was a little lost in translation, because a superfight between Silva and St. Pierre wouldn't be so super without two champions from different divisions meeting in the center of the cage to settle a debate that has raged while both legends have simultaneously ruled their respective roosts:

With St. Pierre coming off 1.5 years layoff it's entirely possible that he could be very rusty. Then again, Condit made the infuriating voluntarily decision to sit on the sidelines for about nine months and wait for St. Pierre to get healthy. Not really sure where the cage rust cutoff starts/ends, but it's certainly not such a tremendous edge when both fighters have been inactive for more than six months.
Rest assured, it will be a solid scrap provided both Greg Jackson-trained fighters aren't afraid to throw caution to the wind and get after it.
St. Pierre has used his time away to "listen to the critics" and has vowed to finish more fights after piling up four consecutive decision victories. "The Natural Born Killer," meanwhile, looked anything but in his most recent performance against Nick Diaz at UFC 143, playing keep away for most of the five-round bout and point fighting.
It seems like both fighters, style-wise, are headed in different directions. One could lead toward a "meaningful" true "super" fight with Silva, while the other is a not-so super showdown with the Johny Hendricks vs. Martin Kampmann winner.
